Near the top of The Irvine Ranch ®, just east of the city of Orange, the scenery becomes more rugged, even wild in places. Mountains and ridgelines frame the landscape, meadows and valleys and parklands lie below. More than 22,000 acres here dominate the "Orange sphere of influence"--an area larger than the city itself that one day may be annexed and incorporated into the city.
The Irvine Company has spent more than a decade refining a vision for its land just east of the City of Orange. As a result, residents of Orange have an unparalleled open space and recreation treasure preserved in their backyard. The Irvine Ranch east of Orange contains permanently protected open space and recreation assets that make up more than 20,000 acres or 90 percent of the city’s sphere of influence. The area features abundant parks, trails and even a lake that offer a variety of recreational activities, along with stunning vistas and a giant swath of valuable habitat that nurtures a rich array of plants and animal species.
Also within the Orange sphere of influence, approximately 1,400 acres have been identified for a balance of needed new housing. What was once thought appropriate here--some 12,000 homes and significant retail and commercial development on 7,100 acres as approved in the 1989 East Orange General Plan--has been reconsidered and significantly downsized. Smaller, more intimate residential communities are now envisioned. The project also includes a 20-acre sports park, an opportunity for a golf course, a significant investment in El Modena High School, trails and parks, all surrounded by thousands of acres of permanently protected lands.
